{"id":44,"date":"2025-08-16T10:43:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T10:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hrbnotes.com\/notes\/?p=44"},"modified":"2025-08-16T10:43:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T10:43:17","slug":"the-thinker-of-a-thought-is-just-another-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrbnotes.com\/notes\/2025\/08\/16\/the-thinker-of-a-thought-is-just-another-thought\/","title":{"rendered":"The thinker of a thought is just another thought"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The thinker of a thought is just another thought<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hrb Notes:[1608202502]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd0d 1. <strong>Conventional View vs This Philosophy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conventional View:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We usually assume:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>I<\/em> am the <strong>thinker<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thoughts come and go, but <em>I<\/em> am behind them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I choose, I think, I decide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>This Philosophy:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It challenges that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The &#8220;I&#8221; who claims to think \u2014 <strong>that sense of a thinker<\/strong> \u2014 is <strong>itself a thought<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s not separate from thought but <strong>part of the thought process<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udde0 2. <strong>What is a &#8220;thinker&#8221;?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you introspect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can you find a <strong>separate entity<\/strong> called the &#8220;thinker&#8221;?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or is the <strong>sense of a thinker<\/strong> just another <strong>mental appearance<\/strong>, like a thought saying \u201cI am thinking this\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to this view:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The \u201cI\u201d that says \u201cI am the thinker\u201d is <strong>just another thought<\/strong> arising in consciousness.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\ude9e 3. <strong>Practical Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine this chain in your mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking about dinner.\u201d<br>\u201cI should cook pasta.\u201d<br>\u201cI am thinking this.\u201d<br>\u201cI am the one who thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, pause. Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Isn\u2019t every one of those just <strong>a thought<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Including the one that says <strong>\u201cI am the thinker\u201d?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No thinker is independently found.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only <strong>thoughts about a thinker<\/strong> are found.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf0a 4. <strong>Implication: No Separate Self<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This leads to a radical idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is <strong>no separate self<\/strong> controlling thought.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just a <strong>flow of thoughts<\/strong>, and within it, the idea of a \u201cself\u201d or \u201cthinker\u201d <strong>also arises as a thought<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is similar to <strong>David Hume\u2019s<\/strong> insight:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI never can catch myself without a perception, and never can observe anything but the perception.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Or as <strong>Buddhism<\/strong> puts it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere is thinking, but no thinker.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddd8 5. <strong>Why is this important?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It <strong>deconstructs the ego<\/strong> \u2014 the sense of a central, controlling self.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s a pointer toward <strong>non-dual awareness<\/strong> \u2014 where thoughts come and go <strong>in consciousness<\/strong>, but there\u2019s <strong>no one<\/strong> at the center owning them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It invites <strong>freedom<\/strong> from identification with thoughts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The thinker of a thought is just another thought Hrb Notes:[1608202502] \ud83d\udd0d 1.
